What is a Physiatrist? Where do I find one?
It’s
something you grow up taking for granted – mobility. You’ll remember how as a
kid every day you’d jump out of bed and go about your day without giving it a
second thought. As I watched my nine year old skip down the hallway to her room
to get ready for her tumbling class, it made me think of days gone by, when I
was as equally excited to go and kick a soccer ball with some of my mates. As
you age your mobility gradually declines, it’s a fact of life, but there are
some things you can

Back To School Shopping
Tis The Reason For The Season - Back To School ShoppingIf you live in Cherokee County in the suburbs of Atlanta GA,
yesterday was the first day back at school.
The county takes the prize for sending their kids back to school for the
fall semester before anyone else in the nation.
Yep, it’s crazy I know, back to school on August 4th when most of the kids of the
northern hemisphere are just starting their summer vacation. For most parents, back to school shopping is about the list.

You choose the shoes - don't let the shoes woo you!
“But why do orthopedic shoes have to be so ugly? Why doesn't someone make an attractive orthopedic shoe? I’m sure if they did, well…. they’d
clean-up!”Without realizing it the wife of one of the attendees at the
Medtrade show had perfectly framed the quest for the holy grail of the
orthopedic shoe world – an aesthetically pleasing, fashionable, but perfectly
functional shoe. She was standing in the Pedors booth with her left eyebrow raised inquisitively as if it was quit

Am I Obese? Or am I just a bit overweight?
It’s a word that we hear every time there’s a report on
healthcare in America. If you’re like me, you would probably agree that you
could do with losing a couple of pounds, but you wouldn't ever consider
yourself obese. The word connotes images
of the vastly overweight who struggle to walk around a grocery store and
usually elect to ride along in one of those super dangerous supermarket trikes,
or someone that needs help getting back up should they be unfortunate enough to
fall

What are orthotics? Are they different from inserts?
Orthosis, orthoses,
or orthotic?Terminology can often add to the confusion of a subject. Words used in different settings can mean
very different things. Words mispronounced can lead to completely new words
which then take on a life of their own.
Google, somewhat inadvertently, or perhaps advertently, given that they
make their coin from adverts, are, perhaps, complicit in the whole affair. The word “orthosis” is a great example. An orthosis is a device that provides
correction, suppor

What is a Pedorthist? Where can I find one near me?
It’s not a word you hear that often, “Pedorthics”, pronounced
peh-dor-thiks but in the
orthopedic shoe world “
Pedorthists”
pronounced peh-dor-thists
are the “old shoe dogs” that have
been trained to fit and modify footwear
to ensure that the patient’s footwear needs are met. Many work in
multi-generational family owned businesses that are sadly becoming a dying breed
in America.
I first heard the word in late 1995 when my brother and I
were about to launch our “boo

What is Plantar Fasciitis? Is it just a sore heel?
A few more weeks and we’re headed towards that time of year
- late summer - what I call the Plantar Fasciitis season.Sometimes it starts early in late July but more often than
not it really hits in mid to late August and then gets full blown in September.
That’s when the phone really starts ringing. The first batch of callers are from the southern, warmer
parts of the US, but by September the rest of the country has caught up. It all depends on the weather and how early
on in the year peop

Pedors Classic Shoes For Arthritis
The Story Behind The Pedors Classic Shoes For Arthritis
Someone recently asked me how I got into the orthopedic shoe
business. I replied, as I usually do
that “it kind of happened by accident and alcohol may have played a minor role”.
But this time my daughter Georgia, aka “Gigi”
was close by and she beamed as she saw an opening.
“Daddy” she said with her 9 year old smile that is beginning
to look like a few orthodontist visits are in her near future, “don’t
you mean it was serendi
